Château Climens

Château Climens is a historic and prestigious winery, likely the most significant estate dedicated to producing Barsac, the renowned sweet botrytized wine of the Bordeaux region. The name Climens first appears in a document dated 1547, referring to the Roborel de Climens family, who owned the château until 1802. From that year onward, the property has changed hands among six other families: the Binauds, the Lacostes, the Gounouilhous, the Lurtons, and more recently, the Bérénice Lurton family, who in 2022 sold it to the Moitry family, the current owners. A distinctive feature of Château Climens compared to other estates in the Barsac and Sauternes area is that its wines are made exclusively from Sémillon grapes, without the addition of Sauvignon Blanc, a variety often used to enhance freshness. This uniqueness is due to the fact that Château Climens’ vineyards naturally impart freshness to the wine through the mineral quality of the soil. Unsurprisingly, thanks to its exceptional viticultural aptitude, Château Climens has earned the nickname “Lord of Barsac.”

Château Climens’ 32 hectares of vineyards are planted in a single block surrounding the château, on soils composed of a thin layer of clayey and ferruginous sands known as the “red sands of Barsac,” resting atop a limestone subsoil. The estate’s characteristic microclimate plays a crucial role, with alternating morning mists and sunny afternoons fostering the optimal development of noble rot on the grapes. This rot, caused by the Botrytis cinerea fungus, dehydrates the berries, concentrating sugars and aromas. In 2010, the estate successfully adopted biodynamic farming practices, quickly observing improved vine health and, consequently, higher wine quality. In the winery, in addition to traditional oak barrels, stainless steel tanks, concrete vats, and unique glass containers are also used.

The emblem of Château Climens is its Barsac 1er Cru Classé, a dessert wine that astonishes with its richness, complexity, depth, and elegance, standing at the pinnacle of quality worldwide in its category.
