Domaine Royal de Jarras

Through a sustainable approach linked to the terroir, Domaine Royal de Jarras aims to reflect the unique character of Sable de Camargue, a wine-growing area located on the eastern flank of the Languedoc, on the Mediterranean Sea, known for the production of rosé wines. This is a land rich in biodiversity, home to more than 250 species of vertebrates, i.e. more than 30% of all vertebrates present in France. To these are added plants and other animals for a total of no less than 761 species. At Sable de Camargue, the highly sandy matrix of the soils also enabled the vineyards to survive the devastating phylloxera crisis of the 19th century, when European viticulture was brought to its knees by a small parasite from America, called phylloxera. Since its foundation in 1883, the Domaine Royal de Jarras has established itself as one of the most important wine cellars in the area, making the most of the vineyard heritage at its disposal.

The vineyards of the Domaine Royal de Jarras, extending over no less than 429 hectares, are surrounded by lagoons, heaths, sea and forests, making up a singular wine-growing context of flourishing biodiversity. The soils consist almost entirely of sand while the climate is typically Mediterranean, strongly influenced by the winds blowing in from the sea. On these soil and environmental parameters, the estate grows the traditional varieties Grenache Noir and Grenache Gris, as well as the ubiquitous Chardonnay vine. Agronomic management is based on the principles of organic viticulture, with the adoption of practices and expedients such as the total exclusion of herbicides, the use of a vegetal cover of rye to protect the soils from wind erosion and the use of mainly organic fertilisers. In the cellar, the grapes are then processed through temperature-controlled vinification, aimed at enhancing the aromatic properties of the wines.

In keeping with the tradition of the area, the production of the Domaine Royal de Jarras revolves around rosé wines, perfectly embodying the soft, savoury style of the rosés of Sable de Camargue. Among these, the case of Grenache Gris is particular, which vinified in rosé gives a wine with a pale pink, almost greyish colour, hence the appellation 'Gris de Gris'.
