Scala Dei
The Catalan winery Scala Dei has contributed to writing the wine history of Priorat with its labels predominantly based on Garnacha. We are at the foot of Montsant, precisely in the hamlet of Escaladei, from which the name of this wine reality founded in 1878 originates. The production style embraced by Scala Dei is traditional, except for a recent period in which the influence of wood was more pronounced. Furthermore, the estate operates in full respect of the ecosystem, through sustainable agronomic and enological practices aimed at creating genuine wines, which are matured in a magnificent 17th-century cellar, built by monks within an ancient charterhouse that has become a tourist attraction for its historical and cultural value.
Cellers Scala Dei consists of 70 hectares of vineyards spread over 41 different plots. About half of the vineyard area rests on classic slate soils, while the remaining part is located on clay-limestone soils at high altitudes, ranging from 500 to 800 meters above sea level.from the sea. As much as 3/4 of the ampelographic platform available to the winery consists of Garnacha, with the remainder allocated to Cariñena (locally known as Carignano), Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and others. The agronomic management follows the principles of organic farming, excluding the use of pesticides and herbicides and using sheep manure as fertilizer instead of chemical fertilizers. Harvesting is done by hand and is accompanied by strict selection of the bunches, while the vinifications are parcel-based. After a brief period during which the winery made extensive use of barriques for aging, today it has returned to the traditional use of large barrels and tonneaux, as well as concrete tanks, in order to bring out the pure imprint of the territory while avoiding the invasiveness of small woods.
The wines of Scala Dei are bottles of character, endowed with expressive fullness and dynamism, giving life to a wide selection capable of revealing every facet that Garnacha takes on in Priorat.
