Thunevin-Calvet

At the foot of the French Pyrenees, near the village of Maury, lies Domaine Thunevin-Calvet, a winery with a modern approach that respects the local tradition. Maury is located in the Mediterranean wine region of Roussillon, bordering Catalonia, where in 2001 Jean-Luc Thunevin, owner of Château Valandraud in Saint-Emilion, and Jean-Roger Calvet began a collaboration aimed at producing high-quality wines. Initially, Jean-Luc purchased a few hectares of vineyards that he shared with Jean-Roger's plots, who is originally from Roussillon, from which the partners obtained the first vintage vinifying in a small garage in Maury. From that moment on, the project experienced a gradual expansion and modernization, leading to the inauguration of the new winery in 2008, built to highly ecological standards.

The estate of Thunevin-Calvet consists of 65 hectares of vineyards, cultivated sustainably and dedicated to the local grape varieties Grenache Noir, Syrah, and Carignan for the black grapes, Macabeu,Grenache Gris and Grenache Blanc among the white grapes, all varieties predominantly grown on clay or sandy soils, rich in schist, granite, and limestone depending on the reference subzone. Some vines are over a century old and the yields per hectare are very low, compensated by a high quality of grapes. The harvest is done by hand and is accompanied by a double selection, the first directly in the vineyard and the second in the winery, with subsequent fermentations taking place in concrete tanks or stainless steel vats. For some wines, the maturation phase occurs in the same types of wine containers while for others in oak barrels of varying capacities.
